FINLAND
Tanssikeskus
Helsinki
http://www.tanssikeskusfootlight.fi/
Recommended teachers: Gabriella S, Marie-Pierre G.
Notes from contributor Johanna: “You can check out the spaces and class-descriptions on my blog too. My favorite teachers are Gabriella S. and Marie-Pierre G. Both teach in the tradition of the French School, G with added Bournonville – her first teacher was a soloist at Royal Danish Ballet. Marie-Pierre, who herself was a principal dancer at the same RDB until 2008, is very much influenced by Balanchine, but the Danish influence is strong as well. Other than their cool CV, these teachers impress the hell out of me because they are demanding, meticulous, pushy in the best way, energetic, and inspiring beyond! They really see the potential in each (adult) dancer. Long before you do. They both like to give lots of coorections, also individual and hands-on. If you want challenge yourself in a positive and encouraging class, there are no better teachers to learn from!”

The owner/instructor, Sue, is amazing, and is ready and willing to give you whatever it is you are looking for. Want to take it for fun? You won’t get any, “let’s try it again until you can do it right.” What to seriously improve? Believe me, she’s got the experience and know-how to move you along. Seoul Arts Center: The Korea National Academy of Ballet (I don’t think there is anything better, at least in South Korea — great people there!!) and near Chongshin University – Isu subway stop: Kim Nari Ballet. Both of these places offer adult classes. The academy offers periodic performance opportunities for adult students who have had class there for a minimum of 6 months.

Chicago, IL: Joffrey Academy. At least one adult ballet class every day. Lots of variety, extremely talented teachers. Beautiful, airy downtown studios. Five levels: Basic (for newbies), Beginner (requires knowledge of basic ballet technique and steps), Advanced Beginner (like Beginner, but faster and harder), Intermediate, and Advanced. The pros often show up in Advanced–it’s not for the faint of heart! The school also offers adult intro to pointe. There’s also Keep Fit Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Pilates, Zumba, Modern, and Yoga. All around, a classy studio with tons of options and lots of adults taking ballet because they love it.

Recommended teachers: Tatyana Shargorodsky (beginner/intermediate) Melinda Pendleton (intermediate/advanced), John White (advanced)

PAB offers adult classes that run from rank beginner through truly advanced, both mornings and evenings. While its advanced classes are some of the best anywhere, what’s particularly good about PAB is that its adult beginner program is also rigorous and technical. My experience has been that adult beginner classes (in contrast with adult intermediate or advanced) are often not treated very seriously by the faculty. Expectations start low, and stay low; technique isn’t built properly, and the aim seems to be to entertain rather than educate because true progress can’t reasonably be expected. At PAB, however, the adult beginner classes move with a real syllabus. No matter what your initial capabilities are in terms of strength, flexibility, and turnout, you’re going to be trained to maximize your potential the correct way. That hip is under you, that heel is forward, and you’re working that core at your own personal limit no matter who you are, what your age is, or whatever it is you can do now. Over time, you’ll get to whatever YOUR best is and proceed properly, safely, and rigorously to intermediate levels and beyond. If her class times work for you, and you are a rank beginner, Ms. Shargorodsky is particularly good at taking you seriously no matter who you are, and keeping focus on how to get you better properly with the same attention to detail no matter how long it takes.

(N.B.: I am NOT affiliated with the studio in any way other than having been one of its students.)

Hi. I currently live in Terrassa Spain, outskirts of Barcelona and I have absolutely no luck in finding a good ballet studio that teaches adult classes. I used to be a professional ballet dancer about 8 years ago. Since then, I suffered numerous tragedies that lead me to leave my Sacramento California home and move to Spain. I am 36 years old and obese.I would really like to get back into ballet. Ballet always solved any heartaches. Please.. Can you recommend any ballet studio. It just seems as though ballet, in Spain, is for little girls. Well.. What about people like me?
