the gaaaccckkkking is over (for the next 2 weeks)

Filed under: stupid — apricot @ 10:52 am

I will never do that again, I say, and yet: every term is busier than the next. I am hoping that next quarter, all I will be doing is taking Chinese and TAing, and pleasegodplease let me get some of my own reading/research done.

Taing this term felt like a heavy imposition, although I really do love students and teaching generally. It just feels a little impossible with one’s own work looming over the ole shoulder pads, and occasionally reading something related to one’s own topic and getting fired up!! only to realize that one has to go and grade fifty billion exams.

I am dreaming of leaving graduate school, going to law school, making a gazillion bucks and then spending the rest of my life passed out in my bed, getting up occasionally to put away some hummus and har gow.

I have been bingeing on hummus these past few weeks. And in classic dumpie style, Trader Joe’s 12 Grain mini snack crackers.

Things to do:

  1. Tidy up floor of room, which is currently littered with blue books
  2. Wash bedsheets, littered with cracker crumbs
  3. Organize desk, covered in exam prompts and expired to-do lists
  4. Return clothes purchased on whim
  5. Purchase christmas presents for fam + boy
  6. Ask apartment manager why there is no hot water
  7. Review Chinese for at least an hour each day
  8. Break in purple satin shoes! for christmas party
  9. Read a few books that actually pertain to my own research! o joy!
  10. Pay bills–I have to pay $115 for the privilege of being a TA next term. Stupid.

More cogent posts to come, as sanity slowly returns.

  2. Wait a minute, you have to pay to TA? How does that work?

  3. Thanks Lisa! Let’s get together STAT.

Lindy, if I could explain UCLA’s bureaucracy to you, I…I don’t know. I don’t think it’s possible to explain UCLA’s bureaucracy.

I don’t know why they don’t just take it out of our paycheck, or whatever. It’s bizarre.

  4. I’m more interested in the philosophical justification for why YOU pay THEM for the privilege of doing MORE work …

  5. Because it’s part of our education as scholars, teachers, blah blah blah.

It’s pretty stupid. THat’s pretty much all it is.

  6. Dang. That’s quite a racket they’re running. Scott has an interview with UCLA for an economics assistant professorship … I should tell him to make sure they’re going to pay him ;-) (BTW, I’m psyched about that interview, not least because you’re in LA!!)
