poor, so very poor

Filed under: academics — apricot @ 2:59 pm

According to the UCLA bookstore, my books add up to an astonishing 395 for my two courses. Then there’s my independent study, for which I have no idea how much I’ve yet to spend. I’ve tried to go as cheaply as possible, and have limited the damage to only about 160 so far for one class.

Thank god for scholarshare, anyway; geez, I thought I would spend around 300 on books, but it looks like upwards of 400 or 500 or so. Dang. I remember feeling indignant as an undergrad when my books added up to 200. Sigh. Well, I guess you science people have no sympathy for me, but c’mon! We humanities people have no future to bank on like you guys. Sad.

It may come to mugging undergraduates on the street.

Academic blogs

Filed under: academics — apricot @ 10:30 am

In these last few days freedom before grad school begins in earnest, I’ve been reading a number of academic blogs (while setting up the new place of course). By academic I mean the authors are professors, graduate students, or related peeps. It’s interesting to see that each blog fiercely protects the identity of the person, much more so than blogs of non-academics. I suppose that much more rides on the credibility of profs than your average joe, but I found the anonymity kind of stifling after awhile.

Still, there are definitely some good reads to be had in these, especially for people new to academe myself! I may consider going anonymous at some point, but it’s only friends who read this anyway. Just so I’m not posting my full name and social security number—and I think I should be ok.

Sexed in Higher Ed is the blog of a grad student & sex ed lecture; it’s got great rants about stupid students. My favorite is Rate Your Students, a site where (mostly) profs go to vent about teaching. It gets depressing reading after too long, but it’s useful to preview what is bound to come after graduate school. An often-updated young-professor blog is newkidonthehallway.

I don’t anticipate that this blog will become exclusively (or even mostly) an academic blog. It’s pretty clear that most people who come to this blog are here for the hard core nudity.

Meet Elizabeth

townie
There was a mad moment last month when I contemplated the purchase of a car. But then, yikes, realized that not only would that cost me upwards of 300 bucks but also cost about 700 a year for parking. Also costs for gas, upkeep, etc.

So instead, I invested in a gorgeous little one-speed cruiser bicycle. She came in last week and I christened her Elizabeth–doesn’t she look like an Elizabeth?

Mi papi and I took a 10 mi. test ride along the Santa Ana river Saturday and she performed magnificently. I’m looking forward to zipping around campus with her.
